the areas where there is room for improvement; and, the strengths that can serve as the foundation upon which to build. The coach helps the athlete set goals and develop plans for the attainment of those goals.

In the game of life, a personal coach does much the same thing. Each person is a unique individual with personal strengths and skills that can serve as the foundation upon which an improved life can be built. Each person has skill sets and personality traits that can be developed and used in the pursuit of the “life we dream of”.

The Coaching Process

The first step in the process is to identify what you truly want. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Yet, this is where many people have trouble. It’s not enough to just want … there has to be true desire and a plan for obtaining those things that are wanted. This is the “goal setting” phase of coaching.

The second step is to develop a plan that moves you toward attaining the goals that you set. This “action plan” is a step by step road map for moving from where you are to where you want to be. The plan must include a sequence of events … the arrangement of those steps into an order that builds logically from one step to the next.

Oftentimes, the execution of these steps requires the development of new habits. Experts tell us that it takes “x” number of days to form a new habit. Some say it takes 30 days; others, 90 days; others say more and still others say less. Regardless of the number of days, creating a new habit requires repetition; performing the new action day after day until it is embedded in your being as completely as knowing your name.

Now, anyone who has made a New Year’s Resolution knows that wanting and doing are two entirely different things. You can have lots of desire and a plan; but, until there is accountability, the resolution stays out there … a shimmering goal on the horizon that remains just out of reach. Here is where your personal coach comes into the picture.

The coach serves as your accountability partner … helps you monitor your progress; identify where the plan is working and where it needs adjustment. Above all, the coach asks questions that help you see the progress you are making; what needs to be done next; and, where there are challenges or obstacles, helps you find ways to overcome (or go around those obstacles). The coach helps you hold yourself accountable to you.

The COREMAP® DIFFERENCE

One of the tools we use in the coaching process is COREMAP®, a Multidimensional Awareness Profile that empowers each person with the ability to see his or her strongest traits and abilities and to make the best use of them. It looks beyond the obvious surface characteristics and helps each person find his or her own “natural” self and all that he or she was meant to be.

As a certified CORE<sup>®</sup> Facilitator, my role is to ask the questions that are key to this process and that help you identify those traits that, when properly applied, can help you in the attainment of the goals that are most important to you;
