{"id":313,"date":"2011-09-09T02:29:11","date_gmt":"2011-09-09T02:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eagleoneresources.com\/?p=313"},"modified":"2011-09-09T02:29:11","modified_gmt":"2011-09-09T02:29:11","slug":"saving-money-at-the-grocery-store-%e2%80%93-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eagleoneresources.com\/?p=313","title":{"rendered":"Saving Money at the Grocery Store \u2013 part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fcbkbttn_buttons_block\" id=\"fcbkbttn_left\"><div class=\"fcbkbttn_button\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eagleoneresources.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/facebook-button-plugin\/images\/standard-facebook-ico.png\" alt=\"Fb-Button\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><div class=\"fcbkbttn_like \"><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/eagleoneresources.com\/?p=313\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\" layout=\"standard\"  width=\"225px\" size=\"small\"><\/fb:like><\/div><\/div><p>My friend Carol proudly declared herself to be Coupon Clipping Royalty and claimed the title, \u201cQueen of the Coupon Clippers\u201d.\u00a0 Two questions immediately come to mind when people start talking about coupons.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Can you really save enough money to make taking time to clip them worthwhile?<\/li>\n<li>Where do you find all of these \u201cgreat\u201d savings?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Let\u2019s take the first of these \u00a0questions.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, you really can save enough money to make it worth the time it takes to clip the coupons!\u00a0 Think of it this way \u2026 what is the value of your time?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you spent 30 minutes clipping coupons and saved just $10 on your grocery shopping expedition, you\u2019d have the equivalent earning of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">$20 per hour<\/span>!\u00a0 Aren\u2019t you worth that kind of money?<\/p>\n<p>If you spent just 30 minutes reviewing the grocery store advertising circulars to see what kinds of sales you could take advantage of before planning your menus for the week, how much could you save?\u00a0 To find out, I performed a brief experiment.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the grocery store flyer for a nearby supermarket and created seven dinner menus using only \u201cbuy-one-get-one\u201d items.\u00a0 I tracked the amount of time it took to complete this exercise here are the results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 chuck roasts \u2013 one weighed 2.88 pounds while the other weighed 2.82 pounds.\u00a0 At $4.99\/lb., I got 5.70 pounds of beef for $14.37.\u00a0 The first one was cut into bite sized pieces and cooked with vegetables to make a beef stew for Monday\u2019s Dinner.\u00a0 The second one was used to make pot roast for Sunday Dinner.\u00a0 <strong>Total spent:\u00a0 $14.37\u00a0 Total Saved:\u00a0 $14.07<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>2 bags of frozen, boneless\/skinless chicken breasts.\u00a0 Each bag contains a total of 40 ounces of chicken; or, 8 pieces, each weighing approximately 5 ounces.\u00a0 Four pieces were cut into small pieces and turned into sweet and sour chicken for Tuesday\u2019s Dinner.\u00a0 Another 4 pieces were baked with some rice, matchstick carrots, and broccoli along with a can of cream of chicken soup to make a casserole for Thursday\u2019s dinner.\u00a0 <strong>Total Spent:\u00a0 $10.99.\u00a0 Total Saved $10.99<\/strong>; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and<\/span>, I have the second bag of chicken breasts in the freezer for use next week.<\/li>\n<li>2 packages of center cut pork chops.\u00a0 The first package weighed 1.29 pounds and was baked for Wednesday\u2019s Dinner.\u00a0 The second package weighed 1.22 pounds was cut into bite sized pieces and simmered in a plum sauce and served with rice (also buy-one-get-one) for Friday\u2019s dinner.\u00a0 Total spent on the pork:\u00a0 $6.05.\u00a0 <strong>Total Saved on the pork $5.72<\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>Total spent for rice:\u00a0 $2.99<\/strong> for a 3 pound bag.\u00a0 <strong>Total saved $2.99,<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and<\/span>, I have enough rice left in the pantry for several more meals.<\/li>\n<li>2 jars of pasta sauce (each 24 ounces) and 2 packages of spaghetti (each 1 pound).\u00a0 One package of spaghetti and one jar of sauce were cooked for Saturday\u2019s dinner.\u00a0 The remaining package and jar are in the pantry for use next week.\u00a0 <strong>Total spent for both pasta and sauce:\u00a0 $5.08\u00a0 Total saved:\u00a0 $5.08<\/strong>.<strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>2 frozen pepperoni pizzas.\u00a0 One was baked for dinner on Saturday night and the other is in the freezer for use next week.\u00a0 <strong>Total spent:\u00a0 $6.99.\u00a0 Total saved $6.99<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Total savings:\u00a0 $45.84<\/p>\n<p>Time spent:\u00a0 20 minutes<\/p>\n<p>Per hour \u201cwage\u201d equivalent:\u00a0 $137.52<\/p>\n<p>I would dare say that most of us, if offered a job that paid $137 per hour, would leap at that opportunity.\u00a0 This \u201cjob\u201d is yours for the taking.\u00a0 All you have to do is block out a little time to plan the menus and shop the flyers to find the bargains.\u00a0 You\u2019ll eat well;
